Championship Show 2011
The Club’s 2011 Championship Show will be held on Saturday 9th April at Lawrie & Symington Agricultural Centre, Lanark, ML11 9AX.
This year the Club is having one judge – Janet Barkas from New Zealand.
Janet Barkas
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, I have been associated with dogs all my life. As a girl the family had Scottish Terriers and later Australian Silky Terriers. I became interested in the Great Dane thirty-two years ago and purchased my first show bitch in 1978. She was a harlequin and was shown through to her Championship Title while still in the junior classes, (aged 12 months 4 days). On her retirement at five years old she held 94 CC’s and had won many In Show Awards including Best In Show All Breeds. This bitch was the foundation for my Crestwell Kennels and together with imports from England, Australia and Sweden has produced through her lines 18 Crestwell Champions in both harlequin and black. We were also fortunate to have at our kennel a very good blue male who was a prolific winner in the show ring and was titled as an intermediate.
My love for the Great Dane and dogs in general led me to expand my interest in the dog world. I was Editor of the Great Dane Magazine for 11 years and served on several committees, both All Breeds and Specialty Clubs. I am presently the President on the Central North and South Island Great Dane Assn.Inc.
I began my judging career in 1982 and progressed to judge All Breeds and Best In Show to Open level. Presently I am licensed to award Challenge Certificates to 44 breeds and have judged All Breed Championship shows in many countries including New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Germany, Finland, Hungary, England, Ireland, Paraguay, Sweden and Serbia. I have also judged amongst the other breeds, Great Danes in most of the above countries. In 1988 I judged the Great Dane National (Ch) show in Finland and in 2004 The Great Dane Club Championship Show in England.
